  • Android 13 DP1 has dynamic icon theming for third-party apps

Android 13 DP1 has dynamic icon theming for third-party apps

Material UI will go beyond the Pixel family, according to Google, but that doesn’t mean it will stop changing and growing in new ways. In Android 12 Beta 3, an experiment extends the dynamic theming system’s reach to home screen icons, but only for Google’s own apps. Third-party apps can now build their own theming-friendly icons in Android 13, so you can have the two-tone icon packs you’ve always wanted without having to install a custom launcher.

Themed app icons, like all of the other ways Material You may decorate an app, take on the color of your backdrop. This will either style the icon’s background or the icon itself, depending on whether you’re in light or dark mode.

Themed icons are an opt-in feature, so no one will be forced to use them if they don’t like the look. To enable dynamically themed icons, long-press a vacant place on the home screen, select Wallpaper & style, and then scroll down to the Themed icons toggle.

    android 13 icons color

Google is urging app developers to add support for themed icons. The requirements are fairly simple, requiring a new monochromatic vector icon — probably just a mask of the original app icon or reusing a notification icon — and a couple tiny changes to the launcher’s adaptive icon XML and the app manifest.

There is no automated re-styling of app icons in the first developer preview, and there is currently no sign that it will ever be. As a result, programs that don’t support themed icons appear in full color, which detracts from the overall appearance. Of course, this is only the initial developer preview, and Google’s apps are the only ones with themed icon support, at least until the Play Store enables apps that use the Tirimasu SDK.

Many apps will undoubtedly make the necessary adjustments in due time, but it’s unlikely that every app developer will prioritize this, particularly those who wait a long time between updates or resist boosting the target SDK for other reasons.

In the meantime, you’ll probably either want to leave themed icons turned off, or go to the trouble of keeping non-themed icons out of your home screen.

The official changelog is also available on the support page for this new update. It lists all of the new features that the Google Play System update in February 2022 will bring to the devices.

The current version, according to the support page, primarily fixes errors relating to device connectivity, safety, emergency, system, and other issues.

    google play

Fixes for the Play Store’s Play-as-you-go download feature are also included. New app discovery, Google Play Billing changes, and new Play Pass and Play Points capabilities are all part of the February 2022 Google Play System upgrade.

Go here to get the whole changelog for the most recent Google Play System upgrade. Play Protect will continue to improve with the latest version in order to keep your device safe.

Changes will arrive with the Google Play Store v29.2 starting February 8

The Google Play Store’s download and installation performance has also been enhanced. The Play-as-you-go feature will be improved, allowing players to begin playing mobile games while they are being downloaded, reducing wait times.

Overall, the update is extremely feature-rich, and now that the official changelog is available, we know exactly what to expect from a new Google Play System upgrade.

There are also some new developer features. These developer capabilities will aid Google and third-party app developers in making their apps support advertisements, accessibility, machine learning, and AI-related activities.

According to the official support website, the Google Play System update for February will include all major bug fixes for device connectivity, developer services, safety and emergency, system administration, and other services.

All of the previously stated Google Play Store updates, such as improvements to Play-as-you-go, a new app discovery tool, and changes to the Play Pass and Play Points programs, will be available starting February 8th with Google Play Store v29.2.

The official changelog mentions that the developer services and system management updates will be accessible starting February 10 via Google Play services v22.06.2.

Comparing the Google Play System February update with the January update shows it is a nearly identical list. In fact, last month’s update packed in more goodies as compared to the upcoming update.

Redmi K50 powered by Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC to be launched first before other models

Xiaomi is planning to release the Redmi K50 series in China in February. According to the newest information, Xiaomi will release the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1-powered Redmi K50 first, followed by the Dimensity 9000-powered variant. These new advances coincide with the Chinese New Year, which is celebrated according to the Lunar calendar, and most Chinese firms have planned releases and activities to commemorate the auspicious occasion. Xiaomi, predictably, will be present at these events, where the much-anticipated Redmi K50 series will be unveiled. The Redmi K50 series will have four variants with AMOLED high-refresh display panels, new-generation processors, multi-camera configurations, and rapid charging capabilities.

    Xiaomi Redmi K50 Ultra

Snapdragon 8 Gen to launch first

Xiaomi has planned to introduce the Redmi K50 devices with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 CPU, according to Xiaomi executive Lu Weibing. The Redmi K50 models with the Dimensity 9000 processor will be released later. However, the real cause behind the launch’s spread is unknown. The Redmi K50 lineup is likely to include many variants and is expected to come with a variety of processing units, including the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, the Dimensity 9000, the Dimensity 8000, the Dimensity 7000, and the Snapdragon 870.

    Redmi K50 series specifications

ReRedmi K50, K50 Pro, K50 Pro+, and K50 Gaming Edition are expected to be included in the Redmi K50 series. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC is believed to be used in the Redmi K50 Pro+, while the MediaTek Dimensity 9000 SoC or Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 870 SoC could be used in the Redmi K50 Pro. The Dimensity 9000 SoC could be included in the Redmi K50 Gaming Edition. Finally, either the Dimensity 8000 or the Dimensity 7000 are expected to power the vanilla Redmi K50.

The Redmi K50 series is expected to come with MIUI 13 based on Android 12 (expected). Lower-end models will get a 50W/67W fast charging support while the higher and more expensive models will benefit from a 120W fast charging support. The device is expected to get a 108MP main camera sensor accompanied by other sensors. The Redmi K50 Pro can be launched as a rebadged POCO.

  • OnePlus Nord 2T, will hit the shelves by May

OnePlus Nord 2T, will hit the shelves by May

Because of its recent 10 Pro introduction, all eyes are on OnePlus. While it has yet to be released internationally, Chinese users are already familiar with it. It’s OnePlus’ first flagship since being downgraded to virtually an Oppo sub-brand, and the company is already doing a lot of things differently with it. According to recent sources, the corporation may possibly be planning another launch – a revamp of its existing Nord 2 with familiar logo and intriguing enhancements. We now know when it will be released and how much it will cost according to a fresh leak.

    nord 2t

According to 91mobiles, the OnePlus Nord 2T would be released in India between April and May, citing leaker Yogesh Brar. It might cost anything from 30,000 to 40,000 dollars, or between $400 and $533. The Nord 2T could be a little more expensive than the standard model Nord 2, which costs 30,000 dollars. It’s unlikely that this phone will be released in the United States, as OnePlus prefers to keep its higher-end Nordic phones out of the hands of filthy ‘Muricans.

To refresh your memory, the Nord 2T was earlier rumored to have a MediaTek Dimensity 1300 chipset with up to 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage (a still-unannounced chipset that will most likely be an update of the Dimensity 1200 seen in the Nord 2). It’ll also have ultra-fast 80W charging, exactly like the OnePlus 10 Pro, and given that it’ll have a 4,500 mAh battery, it should be able to charge from 0 to 100% in a couple of minutes.

If this sounds like your next phone and you’re not in the United States, keep an eye out for an announcement shortly.

  • Smart Downloads feature teased on Youtube for Android

Smart Downloads feature teased on Youtube for Android

If you use YouTube Music, you’re probably aware of the app’s Smart Downloads feature. It’s essentially a feature that saves mobile data by downloading some tunes offline anytime you’re connected to Wi-Fi. On the video side of things, the YouTube app for Android is experimenting with something similar. The YouTube app’s Smart Downloads feature will download a handful of videos for you every week based on an algorithm for recommended videos.

Some Android users in Europe have gotten a reminder on their devices to try out the new Smart Downloads function, according to 9to5Google. When you sign up to try it, the YouTube app will automatically download a collection of 20 videos per week while connected to a Wi-Fi network. The videos will be tailored for you based on an algorithm that analyzes your viewing history as well as the types of material you consume on the platform. The downloaded videos, along with any other videos you’ve manually downloaded in the app, will be added to your offline playlist.

While many individuals may find the feature unneeded, it can be useful for those who have limited mobile data and wish to view material while commuting or who do not have frequent access to an internet connection. Users with limited storage on their devices will be warned before any downloads take place, allowing them to take appropriate action to free up space. Only the most recent version of Android, Android 12, currently supports this functionality.

Smart Downloads is currently available only for a few people to try out and only in specific regions. It’s also available only for YouTube Premium subscribers and users who receive the prompt can enroll to try the feature till 14 February. If you are one of the chosen ones, you should see a banner when you open the YouTube app or you can try heading to Settings > Try new features to see if you can find the option there.

  • PUBG is suing Garena, Apple, Google and YouTube over Free Fire

PUBG is suing Garena, Apple, Google and YouTube over Free Fire

PUBG is one of the most popular online shooter games in recent years, and it has had a significant impact on both the desktop and mobile gaming scenes. PUBG is credited with popularizing the online multiplayer battle royale genre, in addition to fueling competitive e-sports. Following PUBG’s success, a slew of other franchises have put their toes in the genre. PUBG’s untimely prohibition in India also left a gap in the market, which others quickly filled before PUBG could respond. PUBG’s creators have now filed a lawsuit against Free Fire’s creators, as well as Apple, Google, and YouTube, alleging IP infringement.

    pubg battlegrounds

As Reuters reports, PUBG developer Krafton Inc has filed a lawsuit in the Central District Court of California, alleging that Garena Online’s Free Fire and Free Fire Max games copy several copyrighted aspects of PUBG: Battlegrounds, including its game structure, in-game items, equipment, and locations.

Free Fire and Free Fire Max extensively copy numerous aspects of Battlegrounds, both individually and in combination, including Battlegrounds’ copyrighted unique game opening “air drop” feature, the game structure and play, the combination and selection of weapons, armor, and unique objects, locations, and the overall choice of color schemes, materials, and textures.

Apple, Google, and YouTube are also named as defendants in the lawsuit: Apple and Google distribute Free Fire through their own app stores, and it’s been reported that Free Fire sales in the United States generated millions of dollars in income in the first three months of 2021. Meanwhile, Free Fire gameplay footage and a Chinese film Biubiubiu, which is supposed to be a live-action portrayal of the game, are allegedly available on YouTube. According to the lawsuit, Krafton ordered Garena to stop “exploiting Free Fire and Free Fire Max,” but Garena refused. Apple and Google have been ordered to stop distributing the games, and YouTube has been urged to remove footage, both of which have yet to be done.

Krafton consequently had to file the lawsuit, requesting the court to block the distribution and sales of the Free Fire games, the infringing videos, in addition to requesting damages that include the companies’ profits from Free Fire sales. It remains to be seen how this plays out in court.

  • First tablet with Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 – Galaxy Tab S8 series #leak

First tablet with Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 – Galaxy Tab S8 series #leak

Samsung, with its Galaxy Tab S series, is one of the few manufacturers interested in selling high-end Android tablets. The forthcoming Tab S8 series has been leaked a few times in recent months, due to regulatory filings and numerous renders, but thanks to a fresh revelation from WinFuture, we may finally know everything there is to know about the tablets.

The Galaxy Tab S8 series includes precise specifications and a few press renders, according to WinFuture. Samsung appears to be sticking with three variants this year, as previously reported via leaks: the Tab S8, Tab S8 Plus, and Tab S8 Ultra (there was no Ultra for the Tab S7). According to reports, all three tablets will come with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor, dual rear cameras (12MP primary and 6MP ultra-wide), Wi-Fi 6, a microSD card slot, Bluetooth 5.2, optional 5G, USB Type-C 3.2 Gen 1, fingerprint readers, Android 12 with One UI 4.1, and a S Pen.

The screen size is the most significant distinction between each tablet. The Tab S8 will reportedly have an 11-inch LCD screen with a resolution of 2800 x 1752, while the Tab S8 Plus will have a 12.7-inch AMOLED screen with a resolution of 2800 x 1752. The Tab S8 Ultra will boast a gigantic 14.6-inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 2960 x 1848 pixels, whereas Apple’s iPad Pro series only goes up to 12.9 inches. The Tab S8 Ultra, on the other hand, will have a notch at the top (in landscape mode) that houses two 12MP cameras, which seems ridiculous.

Pricing information is not yet known for any of the tablets, but the base Galaxy Tab S7 was $649.99 at release in the United States, and the Tab S7 Plus with a 12.4-inch screen was $849.99 at launch. If the prices are similar this year, it might be best to wait for a sale — even with Samsung’s custom DeX interface, there just aren’t as many tablet-optimized apps available on Android compared to. iPadOS.

  • Sony releases Android 12 stable for Xperia 1 III and Xperia 5 III

Sony releases Android 12 stable for Xperia 1 III and Xperia 5 III

Samsung, Xiaomi, Oppo, OnePlus, and Motorola, among others, have already revealed their Android 12 rollout plans, with Samsung in particular updating its massive smartphone array across geographies at a breakneck speed. Sony has entered the party with their own schedule (if you can call it that), albeit without any precise device timelines. Regardless, the stable Android 12 release for the Xperia 1 III and Xperia 5 III flagships is now available.

Sony releases Android 12 stable for Xperia 1 III and Xperia 5 III

The Sony Xperia 1 III and Xperia 5 III are among the most recent devices to receive Android 12, with build version 61.1.A.1.149 and the December 2021 security patch instead of the one for this month (per XDA-Developers). According to reports, the update is presently being given out in Russia, but only to Asian dual-SIM editions of the Xperia 1 III and Xperia 5 III with version numbers XQ-BC72 and XQ-BQ72, respectively.

We’ll have to wait and watch when other regions get the upgraded firmware because Sony failed to release a thorough global distribution strategy. The update does not yet have a device-specific changelog, but you can reasonably assume that it includes all of the new features listed on the company’s rather generic Android 12 support page.

    ezgif.com gif maker 7

For those unfamiliar, Sony’s version of Android is minimal and only makes a few tweaks to the AOSP build Google distributes to Android OEMs. The company does, however, improve the experience by using a unique 21:9 aspect ratio.

If you have an Xperia 1 III or Xperia 5 III and haven’t received the OTA update yet, go to Settings > Software update to manually check for it. Long screenshots, one-hand mode, increased privacy and security, and, of course, Material You should all be available after you upgrade your handset to Android 12.
