  • Galaxy S20 and Note20 series get a year-end One UI 4 update

    Galaxy S20 and Note20 series get a year-end One UI 4 update

    one ui 4

Samsung’s deployment of One UI 4, which is based on Android 12, has been lightning fast. This year, the firm made a first by launching beta programs for all of its major flagship smartphone lines, including the Galaxy S, Galaxy Note, Galaxy Z Flip, and Galaxy Z Fold. It then went on to release the stable update for devices like the Galaxy S21, Galaxy Z Flip3, and Galaxy Z Fold3 (although with some issues), and now the S20 and Note20 series are following suit.

In less than 48 hours, Samsung overcame a snag that stalled the One UI 4 deployment for its 2021 flagships, released a stable upgrade for the Galaxy Z Fold2, and began rolling out Android 12 to the S20 and Note20 (per SamMobile). In comparison, OnePlus has only recently stabilized Android 12 on its 9 series flagships, while Motorola and Sony have yet to release even a single upgrade – Samsung is clearly gaining ground. However, we hope that the firm conducts its due research to ensure that these updates work as planned and are not hampered by compatibility concerns, as we witnessed with the launching of the S21.

As we speak, Samsung’s stable One UI 4 software is coming out to the Galaxy S20, S20 Plus, S20 Ultra, Note20, Note20 Ultra, and even the S20 FE, so there’s a good possibility you’ll be ditching Android 11 by 2022. Users in Switzerland have already reported receiving Android 12 over the air, but owners of the S20 and Note20 in other regions of the world could anticipate the software to arrive in the next few days (unless Samsung has reason to halt the release). To see if the update is available for your phone, go to Settings > Software update > Download and install.

Galaxy S20 family supports AR objects in Google Search

Google Search helps you to view thousands of 3D models such as objects, pets, skeletons, cells, Neil Armstrong’s spacesuit and much more on many Android devices. You can push these objects into your home by pressing a button, and see them as if they were in the viewfinder of your camera. You can also snap pictures and take videos. The list of supported phones is continuously increasing — devices such as the Sony Xperia 1 II, the Poco X2, the Xiaomi Redmi K30, and the Galaxy Tab S6 Lite from Samsung made the cut we were tested in early June, and now a few more are showing up, including the Galaxy S20 series flagship.

What’s a big-name phone like that just coming to the ARCore list of Google now? That’s far from unique about how Google handles the file, and similarly, last year, the S10 family only showed up after launch. In addition to the updated list, Google is also expanding it to report compatibility with the new Depth API, our other major news of the day for ARCore itself.

Here is the complete list of new devices added as of June. Our new additions are daring:

    • LG K61
    • LG Signature Edition 2019
    • LG V50S ThinQ
    • moto g power
    • motorola edge
    • motorola edge plus
    • Oppo realme 6
    • Oppo realme 6 Pro
    • Oppo Reno3
    • Oppo Reno3 5G
    • Oppo Reno3 Pro 5G
    • Samsung Galaxy A31
    • Samsung Galaxy A41
    • Samsung Galaxy S20
    • Samsung Galaxy S20+ 5G
    • Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G
    • Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 Lite
    • Sony Xperia 1 II
    • Vivo iQOO 3 5G
    • Xiaomi Mi 10
    • Xiaomi Mi 10 Lite 5G
    • Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro
    • Xiaomi Poco X2
    • Xiaomi Redmi K30

If you own one of these, you should already be able to use ARCore features. The functionality comes as part of Google Play Services for AR, which should be automatically installed on your phone as soon as it’s officially supported.

  • Galaxy S20 is official, 5G across the board, and a high price tags

Galaxy S20 is official, 5G across the board, and a high price tags

Samsung used to launch its Galaxy S flagship series during MWC but it shifted the announcement long before the trade show to a separate event. Samsung finally took off the wraps of its Galaxy S20 series consisting of the Galaxy S20, the S20+ and the S20 Plus after months of leaks and a very revealing Galaxy Z Flip commercial during the Oscars.

The new phones all feature the same understated style of glass-sandwich with humongous camera bumps on the back and curved displays on the front, varying only in size and quantity of outside lenses. We are packed with the latest hardware which gives them substantial jumps in performance compared to their predecessors.

They all support 5 G out of the US box and come with at least 128 GB of (expandable) storage and 12 GB of RAM, with some versions of the Galaxy S20 Ultra going up to 16 GB — that’s the amount of regular storage that many smartphones used to ship with in 2013. The phones will arrive in the US with the Snapdragon 865, which can be considered one of the greatest technological advances in long-term mobile chips. Many regions are having the Exynos 990, which need not be afraid of contrast.

    galaxy s20 series

On the imaging front the new Galaxy series also impresses. The base S20 quadruples the megapixel count of any S10, going from a maximum of 16MP on a single camera to a new high of 64MP for the main camera. The Ultra goes a step further and sports the same 108MP wide-angle sensor already producing high-resistance images on the Xiaomi Mi Note 10 from Samsung.

    galaxy s20 camera

Combined with the other lenses (three in total on all plus a fourth S20+ and S20 Ultra Depth Vision sensor) and Samsung’s new image processing algorithms, these cameras should be able to produce great images in a variety of situations. As for video, the phones will capture 8 K footage.

Turning to the front of the device, we see on all of them Samsung’s new Infinity-O display style, which places the front-facing camera cutout in the middle of the notification bar. This could make it more noticeable when watching videos, but the default refresh rate of 120Hz that is available across all three phones will make up for that.

The HD+ AMOLED displays of the S20 series, together with support for HDR10+, will render videos and images beautiful to look at. Samsung also opted not to include a biometric face unlock feature but, despite the anachronistic top bezel of the Pixel 4 and the enormous notch of the iPhone, different aesthetic preferences undoubtedly played a role in that decision.
